Songs for Children and families with a modern sound that are fun and catchy.
How did I come to be writing children’s music?
In my time as a full time guitar teacher I’ve found there’s a need for fun songs that appeal to school aged kids that are entertaining, engaging and also easy to learn, play and sing on guitar making learning music fun.
When teaching young students I always felt there was a lack of easy children’s songs that were fun and aimed at a beginner level of playing, so I started to write my own kids songs to teach. I could write music that was focused on beginner guitar players that was fun, engaging and made it easy to learn the basics of playing. I was able to create songs that taught new skills on the guitar as students grew and required more of a challenge.
So my songs are filled with fun characters and stories that are catchy, easy to play, sing and learn. And I discovered it’s not just guitar students that were interested in these songs, they’re fun to share with others, move to and they take you to a creative place where anything is possible.
It’s all about making learning as fun as possible. Teaching is always best when you’re laughing and encouraging kids to explore and play with music. I love it when kids would come to a lesson and want to show me what they’d created, whether it was a cool tune or a song about Jeremy The Reindeer From Another Dimension, the attack of the Cyber Chicken or the advantages of having a paper iPhone. Songs that can take you to a place in your mind where anything is possible.
When I came to record these songs I set out to give them a modern sound that would be appealing not just to children but parents and teachers too. I record them in my home studio just out of Christchurch in the small country town of Kirwee under the watchful gaze of next doors horses.
I also spend time writing and producing stock music with a distinct New Zealand flavour as well as music for grown ups too.
